The story of the city as told by its people and its archive

Sara Al-Nuaimi wanders through the memory of the cafés of Al-Rashid Street since it opened more than a century ago, from the Zahawi Café to the Hassan Ajami and Umm Kulthum cafés, where poets, politicians and maqam enthusiasts gathered. Through the testimony of longtime regulars and rare archive footage, the episode tells how the cafés were the city's popular parliament.
About the programme
A journey through Baghdad's memory: the alleys, cafés and personalities that shaped the city's history.
Each week “Baghdad Tales” opens a door onto the capital's memory: an old neighbourhood, a literary café, a craft on the verge of dying out, or a figure who left a mark on the city. The programme draws on rare archive footage, some of it dating back to the 1920s, and on the testimony of those who lived through those days.
