The story of the city as told by its people and its archive

The episode tells the story of the horse-drawn tramway between Baghdad and Kadhimiya, dating from the time of the governor Midhat Pasha in the 19th century, which for decades carried pilgrims, traders and students. Using archive photographs and the recollections of elderly residents, it retraces the route and its stops, up to its closure in the 1940s.
About the programme
A journey through Baghdad's memory: the alleys, cafés and personalities that shaped the city's history.
Each week “Baghdad Tales” opens a door onto the capital's memory: an old neighbourhood, a literary café, a craft on the verge of dying out, or a figure who left a mark on the city. The programme draws on rare archive footage, some of it dating back to the 1920s, and on the testimony of those who lived through those days.
